Q: What inspired you to start Shape Up Fitness, and how has your vision evolved over the past 15 years?

Hanna: What inspired me was… because I’ve always loved training. So I kind of knew from quite an early age that I would like to work within the field of fitness, in any shape or form really. And working with women. And I know I probably thought there was a need for something like a niche kind of female fitness thing. But there wasn’t one out there. I know a lot of women, women like going to the gym, they wouldn’t feel completely comfortable there though. So just setting up a space where women can come and train and feel comfortable with likewise women. That was my inspiration, still is.

Q: Can you share some of the challenges you faced when you first started , ShapeUp fitness agency, and how you overcame them?

Hanna: I started quite a basic, from of me just trying it. And then kind of just gradually building up, you know, the classes weren’t big at the start. It was like cousins and five-six people. And then I guess the net challenging part was to get your, get your name out there. And again like that, with word of mouth. And it worked, it worked well.

Q: How have your personal fitness philosophy and practices influenced the ethos of Shape Up Fitness?

Hanna: When I teach. And I guess maybe more so back in the day, we were training to look a certain way. And I feel the biggest change probably now has come within the fitness industry, when I look back at Shape Up Fitness from the start. It’s more now about how you feel, and not just how you look. Of course you look good when you train and you tone your body and everything, but it’s also how you feel. So as much as it’s physical, it’s actually mentally just to kind of get away and get some space for yourself. And so I think, you’re not just training for a month or two, like which most of my clients don’t, they stay with me for the year. So it’s not a quick fix. It’s more of a lifestyle now than a quick fix.

Q: How has the demographic of your clientele changed over time, and how has Shape Up adapted to meet the evolving needs?

Hanna: I guess my clients maybe. They’re growing with me. Yeah. So like they would have probably been a bit younger when I started off and now. You know, similar age to myself. So, yeah. It probably follows my age. A little bit as well. Which is kind of funny enough. It’s also a sign that people are sticking with it because I mean, I have people that are with me from the start that are still with me now.

Q: How have you seen the fitness industry change in the last 12 years, particularly in relation to women’s fitness?

Hanna: Well, I think that’s like what I said before with, you know, we’re not training in particular just to lose weight anymore. It’s like, we can be all body shapes and it’s more to be healthy. And you know, the weight loss, if that comes it’s great, but it’s more, we just know we need to do it just to be healthier. Healthier lifestyle. I think people, I think maybe with COVID. Not to maybe to talk too much about covid times, but I think people changed a little bit around the time as well. You know, what’s important for me. To be healthy. So it’s not a quick fix anymore. It’s more, find something and stick with it. It’s a long-term thing.

Q: In your opinion, what are the most critical factors for success in the fitness industry today?

Hanna: Be genuine. Do it because you love it and don’t try and just get into it because you think it’s easy. Because it’s not, it takes a lot of work, a lot of hours. To put in. Yeah. I just think you genuinely need to have a passion for it, and if you do that, and if that shines through, you’ll do well.

Q: Looking back over the last 12 years, what are you most proud of achieving with Shape Up Fitness?

Hanna: Just being surrounded by amazing women every day, that really pushes me. Pushing each other on, so what’s the word I’m looking for? Motivates. Yeah. Women just being surrounded by women who actually just motivate each other and the energy levels, you know, in the class are just amazing. Even if I come to work sometimes. And you know, sometimes I may not feel like it. You know, even though you love your job, you still have days like that, but then coming to your clients and working with them. You always just leave feeling much better after. So it’s kind of give and take, I guess.

Q: How do you stay motivated and inspired in your role? What drives you to continue evolving Shape Up?

Hanna: My clients. Even just thinking that all these women, like, let’s say I meet them in the morning and then kind of knowing that for the rest of the day, I’ve done something good for them to kind of go on with their day and just feel better. Love that.

Q: What are your future aspirations for Shape Up Fitness?

Hanna: Keep going. And keep growing a little bit, but not too big. I like the personal touch with Shape Up that we really get here. That we all kind of know each other from different classes and. Yeah, just keep challenging all the ladies to keep coming back and, you know, keep pushing the ones that need the extra push, a little bit more and then say, look, you know, if people are coming in as beginners. It doesn’t matter what kind of fitness level you have. Everyone is getting a push.

Q: If you could offer one piece of advice to someone just starting their fitness journey, what would it be?

Hanna: Find something you enjoy doing. And when you enjoy doing it, it’s not going to be a chore and try and look at it from the other way of not just doing it to be slim and, you know, look good. Think of it as a healthy lifestyle change. And also try and find something that you, that you want to stay with for the long run. Rather than just joining something and then which can be hard, I guess, at the start. Because you don’t know.

But you should definitely try ShapeUp Fitness because I’m pretty sure you would enjoy it and you would love the result in both body and mind.
